Mammogram

What is a mammogram?

An X-ray picture of the breast is called a mammogram. Doctors look for early signs of breast cancer by using mammogram screenings. It only takes a few moments to do. And, it can save your life!

Listed below are warning signs of breast cancer from the CDC. Be sure to talk to your doctor if you ever have any of these.

  • New lump in the breast or underarm (armpit).
  • Thickening or swelling of part of the breast. Irritation or dimpling of breast skin.
  • Redness or flaky skin in the nipple area or the breast.
  • Pulling in of the nipple or pain in the nipple area.
  • Nipple discharge other than breast milk, including blood.
  • Any change in the size or the shape of the breast.
  • Pain in the breast.

Who should receive a mammogram?

Females 50 – 75 years old every two years.

Why should I have a mammogram screening?

Mammogram screening can be used to check for breast cancer in women who have no signs or symptoms of the disease. Early detection leads to early treatment and better outcomes.

Do I need a referral to receive a mammogram screening?

UM Health Partners does not require a referral or special authorization. However, the radiology center will require a written order from your primary care provider (PCP). This may be on a radiology form, a referral form, or a note on a prescription form.

Where can I go to have the mammogram screening?

The full cost of the mammogram is covered by UM Health Partners if you visit a radiology center that is in network with UM Health Partners.

Who do I call if I need help?

Call UM Health Partners’ Member Services Department at 1-800-730-8530 and select option 5 to speak with a quality specialist who can help you make the appointment or obtain the order from your PCP.
